Welcome to the ChildCare Education Institute December Newsletter.  This month CCEI discusses Professional Development.

You are a great teacher or administrator!  However, sometimes it is difficult to communicate your special talents and teaching abilities to others.  By designing a portfolio, you can more easily and concretely show others your teaching experiences, educational background, and strengths.

A portfolio is a collection of work and materials assembled in an approved format to demonstrate and document knowledge and skills. It provides proof of your expertise and can encompass knowledge and skills gained from a wide variety of sources.  Some of these sources include:  jobs, independent reading and study, training or in-service programs, hobbies, community or religious activities, military service, travel study, and organization memberships.

A teacher portfolio is a collection of materials and evidence of a teacher's work.  Much like an artist or photographer who uses a portfolio of collected works to illustrate her talents, a well-designed teacher portfolio can reveal a teacher's talents.

Teacher portfolios are organized and constructed by teachers to highlight, document, and demonstrate their professional growth, knowledge, and skills in teaching.  They include documents and materials that collectively suggest the scope and quality of a teacher's growth and performance.

Sometimes referred to as a dossier, a profile, or a resource file, teacher portfolios can capture evidence of an individual's work and talents and are increasingly being used to assess a teacher's overall effectiveness.

Many administrators review portfolios to assess a teacher's professional development, teaching skills, or past performance, prior to hiring, promotion, or offering tenure.

To learn more about creating your professional portfolio, log on to CCEI to take a professional development course outlining all of the requirements of developing and maintaining an early childhood professional portfolio.

Educational Qualifications of Program Administrators and Teaching Staff Building Better Futures for Children and the Profession

  If early childhood practitioners have

  specialized training, they are much
more likely in their work with young
children and families to use the
  evidence-based practices and
  possess the ongoing professional
  commitment we know are necessary
to make a positive difference in
  children's lives.  Read Article
